The Pyramid Guard's Secret
Lily and Jake loved exploring the beach near their grandparents' house. One sunny afternoon, while running through the dunes, they spotted something strange peeking through the sand — the top of a golden pyramid!
"Look!" Jake shouted, pulling Lily's hand. "Someone built a pyramid here!"
The pyramid wasn't made of stone like the ones in books. It shimmered like sunshine, and fresh water bubbled from its peak, creating a little stream that flowed toward the ocean.
Suddenly, a funny figure shuffled from behind the pyramid. It looked like a person, but its skin was the color of sand and seaweed decorated its hair like a crown.
"A zombie!" Lily gasped, remembering the monster movies her older brother watched.
But this zombie didn't moan or reach for brains. It waved friendly and spoke in a voice like ocean waves. "Welcome, little explorers! I'm Zora, guardian of the Water Pyramid."
"You're a zombie?" Jake asked, eyes wide.
Zora laughed, sounding like seashells chimes. "I prefer 'sand spirit.' I've guarded this pyramid for three thousand years, ever since the ancient merfolk built it to collect magical rainwater."
The water flowing from the pyramid sparkled with rainbow colors. Zora explained, "One drop grants courage. Two drops bring wisdom. But three drops?" Zora winked. "Three drops let you speak with sea creatures."
Lily and Jake looked at each other, then at the sparkling water. "Can we try?"
"First," Zora said, pointing a sandy finger, "you must prove your courage. The sun is setting, and starfish need help returning to the deep water. They're stuck in tidal pools!"
Without hesitation, both children took off running along the beach, racing against the rising tide. They scooped up starfish after starfish, gently tossing them back into the waves where they belonged.
"Good!" Zora called, dancing a silly sandy dance. "Now, three drops each!"
The water tasted like sunshine and adventure. That night, Lily and Jake fell asleep listening to the ocean — but now, they could understand what the waves were saying. They heard the crabs' gossip, the dolphins' jokes, and the whales' ancient songs.
Sometimes, when they return to the beach, Zora is still there, guarding the magic pyramid. And sometimes, just sometimes, they go running together along the shore, listening to the secrets of the sea.
