The Pyramid Game

Elena's palm trembled as she held the encrypted drive. Three years of corporate espionage, all reduced to this moment. She'd been the perfect spy—invisible, indispensable, trusted.

"You're wearing your thinking hat again," Marcus had joked yesterday at the Christmas party. He'd adjusted his fedora with that charming grin that had made her fall in love. Or something like love. In their world, feelings were just leverage.

Now she stood in his office, watching the pyramid scheme unravel on his screen. Not the illegal kind—the structural kind. Apex Corp at the top, feeding on smaller companies they acquired and gutted. Marcus had been the architect. She'd been his weapon.

The weight of it hit her like a physical blow. Every friendship she'd forged, every confidence she'd betrayed, every late-night drink with colleagues who'd thought she was one of them. She'd borne it all for the paycheck, for the thrill.

Marcus appeared in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the city lights. "Going somewhere?"

She considered lying. Instead, she placed the drive on his desk. "Your pyramid's about to collapse."

His expression shifted through surprise, calculation, and finally, something that looked almost like pride. "You figured it out."

"I'm tired of being your ghost."

"You were never just that," he said softly. "You were the only one who could keep up."

The air between them crackled with three years of unspoken history. Professional admiration twisted with personal betrayal, attraction poisoned by distrust.

"I'm leaving. With or without the drive."

Marcus studied her, then moved to his safe. "Take it. Consider it your severance."

As she walked out, Elena's palm no longer trembled. The future was uncertain, but for the first time in years, it was hers alone.
