The Pyramid at Midnight
Maya's phone buzzed with the group chat blowing up. 'Pool party at Jake's. Parents gone. Midnight.' She hesitated, thumb hovering over the screen. Last time she'd gone swimming in front of everyone, they'd made fun of how her hair looked when it was wet. 'It's like a frizzy pyramid on your head,' someone had joked.
But this was different. She was different now. 'I'm in,' she typed back.
The party was already hopping when she arrived. Kids from school, people she barely knew, everyone in various states of chill. The backyard pool glowed with underwater lights, steam rising off the surface in the cool night air.
'Maya!' Jake called, waving from the deep end. 'Finally! Get in here!'
She slipped into the water, letting it wrap around her like a familiar embrace. Swimming had always been her thing—she was on the team, had the varsity jacket to prove it. But socially? That was uncharted territory.
'Remember sophomore year?' Chloe lounged on the pool float, pineapple juice in hand. 'When we had to build that pyramid for history class and yours literally collapsed?'
'Thank you for that memory,' Maya rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. 'At least my pyramid didn't fall on Mr. Henderson.'
The group laughed, and something shifted. The jokes felt different now—less like knives, more like... connection. They were all just awkward people trying to figure it out.
Then she saw him—Ryan from English class, standing awkwardly by the snack table. He'd always been quiet, kept to himself. Maya swam over and pulled herself up on the edge.
'Not swimming?' she asked.
He shook his head. 'Don't really... do the whole pool thing.'
'Too worried about the bear attacks?' she joked, and immediately regretted it. What was she doing?
But Ryan laughed. 'Yeah, exactly. All those bears just waiting to drag me under.'
They talked for twenty minutes about everything and nothing—English class, music, how weird it was that they'd barely spoken all year. When someone finally yelled 'BEAR POOL CHECK!' and everyone had to jump in, Ryan actually did it.
Later, as they sat on the pool deck with towels wrapped around them, Ryan looked at her. 'You know, you're not who I thought you were.'
Maya felt her phone buzz again—more texts, more plans, more life happening all at once. 'Yeah,' she said, smiling. 'Neither am I.'
