The Puddle That Whispered
Seven-year-old Lily discovered something strange behind the old oak tree. A tiny puddle was shimmering like liquid silver, even though it hadn't rained for days.
Curious, she knelt down. The water began to ripple and swirl, forming the shape of a small girl made entirely of droplets.
"Hello!" said the water girl. "I'm Marina. Would you like to play?"
Lily's eyes widened. "But... how can we play? You're made of water!"
Marina giggled, sounding like a babbling brook. "Touch the water, silly!"
Lily dipped her finger in. Suddenly, the puddle expanded into a sparkling lake right there in the backyard! Marina grabbed her hand—cool and gentle, like a summer rain.
"First lesson: swimming!" Marina declared.
Lily had always been afraid of putting her face underwater. But Marina made the water feel like a warm hug. Together they swam with fish made of bubbles and explored coral reefs that glowed with underwater rainbows.
"Now, lesson two: running!" Marina said.
The lake transformed into a meadow filled with morning dew. Lily ran through grass that sparkled like diamonds, leaving trails of tiny rainbows wherever her feet touched the ground. Marina ran beside her, leaving droplets that turned into flowers.
"You're fast!" Marina cheered. "But remember: some things you can't rush."
"Like what?" Lily panted.
"Like friendship," Marina said softly. "And courage. Both grow slowly, like wildflowers."
Suddenly, the water began to fade. "My time is ending," Marina whispered. "But remember—water is everywhere. In rain, in oceans, even in your tears when you're sad. And in your sweat when you're brave enough to keep trying."
Lily blinked, and Marina was gone. Just a tiny puddle remained.
The next day at swim lessons, Lily finally put her face underwater. Her instructor asked what changed.
Lily smiled. "I learned that water isn't scary. It's just a friend I haven't met yet."
That night, it rained. Lily pressed her hand against her window, watching each droplet. Somewhere, Marina was dancing in the puddles, waiting for the next adventure.
And somewhere deep inside, Lily knew she'd never be afraid again.
