The Puddle That Became an Ocean
Mittens was a small orange cat who had never, ever liked water. She would tiptoe around puddles as if they were lava. One afternoon, she watched from the porch as a boy named Leo played baseball in his backyard. His golden retriever, Buster, chased every ball with wild joy, his tail wagging like a metronome.
"I wish I could run like that," Mittens sighed.
Suddenly, a baseball rolled right to her paws. It shimmered with rainbow colors, and when Mittens sniffed it, the ball whispered, "Throw me!"
Mittens batted the ball with her paw. Instead of flying through the air, it splashed into ripples of magical light. The puddle in the grass began to grow—wider and deeper—until it became a swimming pool filled with sparkling stars instead of water.
Buster the dog came running and yipped with delight. He leaped right in, doggy-paddling through the starry pool. "Come in, Mittens! It's like floating in space!"
Mittens trembled. "But cats don't swim!"
"This isn't swimming," the baseball bubbled to the surface. "It's dreaming together."
Mittens dipped one paw in. Stars tickled her toes. She stepped in and—amazingly!—she floated. The cat and the dog laughed and played baseball in the magical pool, the ball leaving trails of glitter wherever it went.
When the sun began to set, the pool shrank back into a tiny puddle. The magical ball rolled to a stop.
"We did it together," Mittens purred, curled up beside Buster. "Even a cat and dog can make magic when they're friends."
And from that day on, Mittens wasn't afraid of puddles anymore. Because she knew that sometimes, the scariest things lead to the most wonderful adventures—especially with a friend by your side.
