The Puddle's Secret Friend

watergoldfishfriend

Lily hated rainy days. But this Tuesday, something magical happened.

On her way to school, Lily spotted a peculiar puddle in the sidewalk. Inside, a tiny goldfish swam in circles—impossible, wonderful, and completely alive. The goldfish had shimmering scales that caught the morning light like tiny stars.

'Hello,' said Lily, kneeling beside the water. 'How did you get here?'

The goldfish swam closer to the surface. Its mouth opened and closed, making small bubbles. A whispery voice floated up, like wind through chimes. 'I'm Finnegan. I travel through special water on magical adventures.'

Lily's eyes widened. 'Can I come too?'

Finnegan's scales sparkled brighter. 'Only if you believe in impossible things.'

'I believe!' Lily pressed both hands against her heart.

The water began to swirl like a mini tornado. Lily's reflection rippled and changed. Suddenly, she wasn't looking at a puddle anymore—she was inside it, floating beside Finnegan in a vast underwater world.

Rainbow-colored coral castles rose from the sandy floor. Jellyfish carried glowing lanterns. Tiny seahorses danced through swaying seaweed forests. Everything hummed with gentle music.

'This is my home,' Finnegan said proudly. 'Want to meet my other friends?'

He led Lily to a gathering where creatures of all sizes played together. Big sharks let tiny fish swim on their backs. Grumpy-looking crabs told jokes that made everyone laugh. Even the shyest sea urchins joined the fun.

'Nobody here is too different to be friends,' Finnegan explained. 'That's our secret.'

Lily thought about her school. She usually sat alone at lunch because she thought she was too quiet to make friends. But here, everyone belonged.

Time moved differently in the magical water. When Lily returned to her sidewalk, the school bell hadn't even rung yet. The puddle looked ordinary again—but something had changed.

At lunch that day, Lily sat beside a girl reading alone. 'Hi,' Lily said. 'I like your book.'

The girl smiled, and suddenly Lily had a friend. Sometimes, the smallest puddles hold the biggest secrets—and the best adventures help us find them.

Every rainy day after that, Lily checked the sidewalks. She never saw Finnegan again, but she didn't need to. She carried his magic inside her, the kind that makes every friend feel like they belong.
