The Protein Powder Catastrophe

Kai stood in front of the gym mirror, staring at his reflection like it might reveal the secret to becoming Zac Efron by next week. At fourteen, he was basically a string bean with glasses and zero muscle definition. But today, that changed.

"Dude, you gotta try this," Marcus said, sliding across a tub of something called 'TITAN BULL MASS BUILDER 3000.' "My brother used it. Got absolutely jacked."

The label promised results that sounded borderline illegal. Kai's brain screamed scam, but his ego whispered maybe.

"What's in it?" Kai asked, already reaching for his wallet.

"Just... science stuff. Creatine, protein, some proprietary blend." Marcus waved his hand dismissively.

Kai bought it. Obviously.

The first shake tasted like liquified chalk mixed with regret. Kai choked it down anyway, determined to become his school's next big thing. He followed the tub's instructions: two scoops daily, plus regular workouts.

By day three, Kai's stomach staged a violent protest. He found himself camped on the bathroom floor, googling 'is protein poisoning real' while his cat, Mittens, judged him silently from the doorway.

"Don't look at me like that," he groaned. "At least I'm trying to improve myself. What do you do all day? Sleep? Eat the expensive cat food Dad buys?"

Mittens yawned and walked away.

The real disaster struck during gym class on Friday. Kai was feeling confident—he'd bench-pressed the bar! (The bar alone, but still). Then Coach Miller announced they'd be wrestling, and Kai got paired with Brad. Brad, who already had a beard. Brad, who definitely didn't need fake protein powder.

Kai's stomach chose that exact moment to revolt. The spinach salad at lunch had been a mistake. The protein shake had been a worse mistake.

He made it through approximately three seconds of grappling before his body said absolutely not. Kai bolted for the bathroom, the entire class watching.

"What's his deal?" he heard someone whisper as he disappeared.

"Probably sick."

"Or just weak."

Kai spent the rest of the period hiding in a stall, texting his mom to pick him up early.

Saturday morning, Kai's dad found him staring blankly at the protein tub.

"Rough week?" his dad asked gently.

"I just wanted..." Kai started, then stopped. "I don't know. To not be the smallest guy in gym class. To not get picked last for everything."

His dad nodded slowly. "You know your uncle Jay was tiny until he was sixteen? Then he hit a growth spurt and became absolute bear mode. But he didn't drink that crap—just ate actual food and waited."

"Seriously?"

"Seriously. You're growing, Kai. Your body needs fuel, not whatever 'proprietary blends' they're selling." He gestured to the tub. "That stuff's basically just overpriced vitamin powder with worse taste."

Kai looked at the tub, then at his reflection again. Maybe he'd never be the biggest guy in class. Maybe that wasn't the point.

"So," his dad added, "wanna go get lunch? I'm craving a burger. Real protein."

Kai grinned. "Only if I can get extra pickles."

"Deal."
