The Profile Pic Crisis

Maya's hair was refusing to cooperate. Again. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to tame the frizz, only to end up with something that could charitably be described as "exploded microwave popcorn." Her best friend Chloe had sent approximately seventeen texts asking if Maya was ready to leave, each message more frantic than the last. The Fall Fest was tonight, and apparently, it was the most important social event of the semester. Which, honestly? Excessive.

Maya grabbed her trusty beanie—the one with the tiny pom-pom on top because she was apparently still in 2016—and shoved it over her hair disaster. Whatever. It was fine. She was fine. Everything was fine.

"You're literally wearing a hat indoors?" Chloe raised an eyebrow when they met at the entrance. "At your own risk, bestie."

"Hair's being weird," Maya muttered, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline. "Don't make it a thing."

The gym was already packed, the student body arranged in their usual social pyramid—varsity athletes at the top, band kids forming the solid middle, and everyone else scattered at the bottom trying to look like they belonged somewhere. Maya hated how obvious it all was. Three years of high school, and she still hadn't figured out where she fit.

Then she saw him: Lucas, sophomore year crush that she'd never actually spoken to, standing near the punch bowl with his varsity jacket and that smile that made her stomach do weird flips.

"Oh my god, he's looking at you," Chloe whispered dramatically. "Maya. MAYA. He's literally looking over here. This is your moment."

"I'm gonna run away now," Maya said, genuinely considering bolting for the exit.

"Nope. You're gonna go over there and say literally anything. Compliment his shoes. Ask about his weekend. I don't care. Just talk to him."

Lucas started walking toward them. Maya's heart hammered against her ribs like it was trying to escape her chest. Her palms were sweaty. Why were her palms sweaty? This was ridiculous.

"Hey," he said, stopping in front of them. "I like your hat."

Maya reached up and instinctively pulled it off to say thanks, and of course, because the universe had it out for her, her hair came with it—static-clinging straight up in a magnificent explosion of frizz that could probably be seen from space.

She froze. The entire gym seemed to go silent. She could feel her face burning hotter than a thousand suns.

But Lucas just laughed. Not mean laughing. Actual laughing, like, he thought it was funny. "Whoa, okay, that was unexpectedly dramatic," he said, grinning. "Your hair's got serious personality. I respect it."

And then he took out his phone. "Selfie? Because this moment needs to be documented."

Maya blinked. Then smiled, really smiled, for the first time all night. "Only if I get to keep the hat on for the second one."

"Deal."

Later that night, Maya's Instagram story had three posts: the hair disaster selfie, Lucas laughing next to her ridiculous hair, and a final shot of them both in her beanie, smiling like idiots. Her phone kept buzzing with notifications.

"See?" Chloe texted. "Told you it would be fine."

Maya stared at her phone, grinning at the screen. Sometimes, she thought, the universe didn't hate you. It just had a really weird sense of humor.
