The Popularity Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at the cafeteria's social landscape—a literal pyramid of popularity with the varsity jackets at the apex and everyone else cascading down the tiers. She was currently positioned somewhere near the foundation, right next to the trash cans.

"You look like a zombie," said Jordan, sliding into the seat across from her. "AP World History finally claiming your soul?"

"Dude, I got four hours of sleep," Maya groaned, resting her head on her folded arms. "My brain is officially deceased. But we need to talk about something serious."

Jordan raised an eyebrow. "The fact that you're still crushing on Lucas despite his entire personality being 'I play one sport'?"

"No. Well, yes, but also I'm running for student council secretary."

Jordan's eyes widened. "Wait, WHAT? Since when?"

"Since five minutes ago when I realized that climbing the popularity pyramid is actually possible if you just... get involved," Maya said, sitting up straighter. "Plus, it looks good on college applications."

"Bold strategy," Jordan nodded approvingly. "But you're literally allergic to public speaking. Remember the debate club incident?"

"DON'T bring that up," Maya cringed. "I literally walked out of the room mid-sentence because I forgot how words work."

Before Jordan could roast her further, a commotion erupted near the cafeteria entrance. Someone's cat—a calico that belonged to the art teacher, Ms. Chen—had somehow escaped and was now sprinting through the lunchroom, weaving between tables while students shrieked and jumped onto benches.

"THAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CHAOS I'VE EVER WITNESSED," Jordan declared, pulling out their phone to record.

Maya's instincts kicked in. Without thinking, she dashed toward the chaos, crouching low and making soft clicking sounds. The cat skidded to a halt, tail twitching, then approached her cautiously. Maya scooped it up calmly as the entire cafeteria watched in silence.

"What just happened?" Lucas—FREAKING LUCAS—called out from the popularity pyramid's peak.

"Maya just became the main character," someone whispered.

Ms. Chen rushed in, breathless. "Oh thank GOD, you found Mochi! You're literally my hero."

Maya handed over the cat as her face burned. Everyone was staring. But instead of wanting to disappear, she felt something else—a weird surge of confidence.

"So about that student council thing," Jordan appeared beside her, grinning. "You just secured the entire cat-loving demographic vote. Which, statistically, is probably half the school."

"I hate that you're right," Maya laughed. "But maybe I don't need to climb the pyramid. Maybe I can just... build my own tier."
