The Popularity Pyramid

Marcus stood at the edge of the cafeteria, clutching his tray like a lifeline. The high school social pyramid loomed before him — literal and metaphorical, since someone had taped a crude diagram to the wall showing exactly where every sophomore ranked. He was somewhere near "kids who eat lunch in the bathroom stall."

He pulled his beanie lower, wishing the hat could make him disappear entirely. His thumb hovered over his iPhone screen, where Maya's text from last night still burned into his retinas: "u comin 2 jess's party?"

He hadn't replied. Of course he hadn't.

"Yo, Marcus!" A voice cut through his spiral. Jake, varsity jacket, effortless grin, standing at the top of the pyramid without even trying. "You're coming to Jess's thing tonight, right?"

Marcus blinked. "What?"

"Maya said you might need a ride." Jake shrugged like it was nothing. "I'm picking up a few people. We're leaving at eight."

His heart did something embarrassing. "Oh. Yeah. I mean — if that's cool."

"Bet." Jake fist-bumped him and walked away, leaving Marcus standing there with suddenly shaky hands.

His iPhone buzzed. Maya: "so?? jake just texted me lol"

Marcus typed back, fingers clumsy: "yea i'm in"

He walked to his usual table, but stopped. The pyramid on the wall seemed smaller somehow. He pulled off his hat, running a hand through his flattened hair. The fluorescent lights felt too bright, the cafeteria too loud, but for the first time all year, Marcus sat down somewhere new.

The pyramid wasn't going anywhere. But maybe, just maybe, he didn't have to stay at the bottom forever.
