The Poolside Transformation
Maya's hair was supposed to be her crowning glory this summer. Instead, the cheap dye had turned it a splotchy orange-green disaster, thanks to her older sister's "totally foolproof" YouTube tutorial. Now she was stuck at the community pool, hiding under her dad's old baseball cap while everyone else lived their best lives.
"You gonna join the padel tournament or what?" Liam called from the court nearby. He was shirtless, annoyingly fit, and somehow his curly hair always looked perfect.
Maya sank deeper into her beach chair. Padel was supposed to be THE sport this summer—all the cool kids played it, and apparently you weren't nobody if you couldn't smash that little ball around with style. Her cat, Mittens, had more coordination than she did. Speaking of...
"There's that BEAR of a cat again," Mrs. Chen muttered, dragging her grocery cart past. Mittens had escaped—again—and was currently terrorizing the pool area's pigeons with the swagger of a creature who knew she owned the neighborhood.
Maya's face burned. Between the hair disaster, the social pressure to master padel, and her cat's public reign of terror, she was about ready to evaporate.
"Hey." Liam suddenly appeared, dripping wet from the pool. "Wanna go swimming? The water's actually decent for once."
Her stomach did that thing it always did around him. "I can't. My hair—it's...
"A mess?" He grinned. "So? Last week I dove into the pool with my phone still in my pocket. We've all been there."
She blinked. That was... unexpectedly chill?
"Besides," he added, "Mittens just caught a pigeon. That's way more embarrassing than bad hair."
Maya laughed before she could stop herself. And then she did what any self-respecting teenager would do: she whipped off the cap, let her disastrous hair catch the sunlight, and cannonballed into the pool.
Sometimes you just have to dive in—messy hair, coordination issues, and all.
