The Poolside Secret Agent
Lily pressed her secret spy button—a smooth blue stone she kept in her pocket.
The mission begins now, she whispered to Barnaby, her fluffy golden dog. Barnaby's tail thumped three times.
The pool shimmered in the summer sunlight like a giant, glittering gemstone. This was their spy headquarters, and today they had important work to do.
Something mysterious had been happening at midnight. Mommy said it was probably just fireflies, but Lily knew better. Fireflies didn't make rainbow sparkles that danced on the water's surface.
She adjusted her homemade spy telescope—a paper towel tube wrapped in shiny stickers.
Keep watch, Barnaby, she said, settling into her favorite lounge chair.
The sun dipped lower, painting the sky in streaks of pink and orange. The pool lights flickered on, turning the water into a bowl of glowing blue jelly.
Then Lily saw it.
A tiny figure, no bigger than her thumb, fluttered down from the old oak tree. It had wings like a dragonfly and skin that shimmered like pearls.
Barnaby gave a soft bark.
A winged dog! Another tiny creature glided beside the first one, carrying a pouch that sparkled with magic dust.
Lily held her breath as the tiny pair landed on a pool float shaped like a pizza slice. They were having a party!
More creatures joined them—some playing harps made of spider silk, others tossing glow-dust that created beautiful patterns in the water.
They were Pool Fairies! And they came every night to turn the pool into a magical dance floor.
Barnaby inched forward, his nose twitching with curiosity.
One of the fairies noticed him and waved. The tiny dog-creature flew over and sprinkled some sparkles on Barnaby's nose.
Barnaby sneezed, sending a perfect cloud of rainbow bubbles into the air.
The fairies laughed—a sound like tiny bells.
Lily felt something wonderful bloom in her chest. The world was full of magic, if you only knew where to look for it.
That night, she made a new entry in her spy notebook: Some secrets are meant to be shared, especially the beautiful ones.
And from then on, Lily and Barnaby never spied on the fairies again. Instead, they left special gifts on the pizza float—a shiny button, a pretty flower, sometimes a dog treat for the fairy dog.
And every morning, the gifts were gone, replaced by a single perfect crystal left on the lounge chair.
Pool fairy treasure, from their new friends.
The best spy mission ever, Lily whispered to Barnaby, who thumped his tail in happy agreement.
