The Poolside Riddle
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The Carter's backyard party was in full swing—music thumping, people laughing, splashing everywhere. She felt like she'd walked into the wrong movie.
"Hey!" Carter's voice cut through her spiral. "You made it!" He stood there shirtless, still in his baseball uniform from the game earlier. His hair dripped pool water.
"Yeah," Maya managed. "Sorry I'm... late."
"No worries. Grab a drink!" He dove back into the water.
Maya's best friend Jordan appeared at her elbow, already wet. "You good?"
"Panic level: sphinx riddle," Maya muttered. That was their code for when Maya's anxiety made everything feel impossible to solve.
Jordan rolled their eyes but grinned. "You're overthinking again. Just jump in."
Before Maya could respond, a familiar bark echoed through the yard. Her heart stopped. Not now. Please not now.
Around the corner burst Buster—her neighbors' golden retriever, who she'd been dog-sitting—tongue lolling, tail wagging like he owned the place. He'd somehow escaped their yard and followed her scent.
"Oh my GOD," Maya hissed, rushing to grab him. But Buster had other plans. He spotted the pool and launched himself in a magnificent, cannonball-worthy leap, landing with a massive splash right next to Carter.
Dead silence. Then everyone burst out laughing.
Carter surfaced, sputtering, as Buster paddled around like he'd just won the dog Olympics. "WHAT is happening?!" he laughed, shaking water from his hair.
"That's... that's Buster," Maya called from the edge, face burning. "I'm so sorry, I was watching him for my neighbors and—"
"Bro!" Carter grinned, pulling himself up to sit on the pool edge. "Your dog is a total legend. He just did a way better cannonball than half the baseball team."
Jordan appeared beside her with two sodas. "See? Crisis averted. You're officially the cool girl with the chaos dog."
Maya looked at Buster, now being petted by half the party, his golden fur wet and happy. She looked at Carter, still smiling at her. And suddenly the knot in her chest loosened.
"Yeah," Maya said, finally letting herself smile. "I guess I am."
The sphinx riddle hadn't been solved. She'd just stopped trying to solve it alone.
