The Poolside Pyramid Scheme

Marcus stood at the edge of the community pool, clutching his towel like a lifeline. The water shimmered turquoise under the July sun, but he wasn't there for swimming—not really. He was there because Jenna had posted about it on her story, and everyone who was anyone would be there.

His cat, Barnaby, would be judging him so hard right now. Barnaby, who spent 16 hours a day sleeping and still had more game than Marcus.

"Yo, Marcus!" Jake materialized beside him, holding a suspiciously damp cable. "You gonna stand there all day or what?"

Marcus jumped. "Just... warming up."

"Warming up for what? Hypothermia?" Jake smirked, but his eyes darted toward the pool house where the popular crew had claimed their territory. They sat in a literal pyramid formation—Jenna at the top, her lieutenants on the level below, minions at the base. A social hierarchy as ancient as Egypt, but with vape pens and Spotify playlists.

Jake lowered his voice. "My cousin's cable company is hiring. Four hundred bucks a week, under the table. We could split it."

Marcus stared at him. "You're seriously pitching a pyramid scheme at a pool party?"

"It's NOT a pyramid scheme," Jake said, defensive. "It's multi-level marketing. There's a difference."

"That's literally what people in pyramid schemes say."

Jake groaned. "Whatever. You coming in or what?"

The water looked terrifying. Not because Marcus couldn't swim—he could. But because diving in meant cannonballing into the social deep end. What if he awkwarded it? What if they laughed? What if—

"Hey!" It was Jenna. She was waving at them. "You guys just gonna stand there drying off? The water's perfect!"

Marcus and Jake exchanged looks.

"Well," Jake said, grinning. "Guess we're doing this."

"Doing what?"

"Cannonball contest. Loser has to listen to Jenna's podcast for an hour."

Marcus's heart hammered. But then he thought of Barnaby asleep at home, living his best nine-lives, zero-fucks-given life. If a overweight tabby could own it, so could he.

"You're on," Marcus said, and together they sprinted toward the pool, screaming nonsense at the top of their lungs, two nerdy projectiles launching themselves at the social pyramid—and for once, Marcus wasn't scared of the splash.
