The Poolside Pyramid

Maya felt like a zombie walking through Leo's backyard party. Two hours of smiling at people she barely knew, holding the same red cup, and she was totally running on autopilot. The social pyramid was painfully obvious: the popular crew by the actual pool, the jocks near the padel court, and everyone else scattered like lost satellites.

She spotted Jay by the fence, doing that thing where you look busy checking your phone but you're actually just avoiding eye contact. Maya's stomach did that stupid flutter thing it always did when he was around. She'd been crushing on him since sophomore year, when they'd partnered for that bio project and he'd made a whole pyramid of note cards just to help her study.

"Hey," she said, sliding beside him. "Hiding?"

"Strategically positioning myself," Jay grinned, that crooked smile that made her knees weak. "You?"

"Surviving."

A rustle by the fence made them both jump. A fox—actual wildlife, not the slang kind—stared at them with orange eyes, bold as anything.

"No way," Maya breathed.

The fox trotted past, tail flicking, totally unbothered by the bass thumping from the speakers. It paused by the abandoned padel court, sniffed at a forgotten tennis ball, and kept going like this was just another stop on its nightly rounds.

"That's so random," Jay laughed. "But also kind of iconic."

Their eyes met, and for once, Maya didn't look away first.

"Wanna get out of here?" he asked. "There's this 24-hour diner..."

The zombie feeling evaporated. The social pyramid didn't matter. The fox had been the sign she needed—sometimes you just gotta be bold enough to crash the party.

"Absolutely," Maya said, already heading toward the gate.

Behind them, the real pool glimmered with underwater lights. But she didn't look back.
