The Poolside Pyramid

Maya smoothed her frizzy hair for the tenth time, her reflection in the bathroom mirror showing a girl who'd rather be anywhere but here. The invitation to Jake's pool party had seemed like fate—until the social reality set in.

The backyard buzzed with chlorine and techno music. Jake's pool shimmered like something from a movie, complete with a floating inflatable pyramid that served as the throne of the social hierarchy. At the top? The popular girls, perfect and poised.

Maya positioned herself behind the decorative bamboo screen, a classic spy maneuver she'd perfected since middle school. From here, she could observe without participating—her signature move. But then Jake climbed onto the inflatable pyramid, his wet hair plastering to his forehead, and he looked right at her hiding spot.

"Maya! Come join!" he yelled over the music.

Her stomach did that horrible flip-flop thing. But when she stepped out, hair frizzy and anxiety spiking, nobody laughed. Jake jumped off the pyramid, created a splash that drenched the mean girls, and held out his hand.

"Always knew you were watching," he grinned. "Wanted to save you a spot on the pyramid—top level, obviously."

Maybe being seen wasn't the worst thing. Maybe the pyramid wasn't a hierarchy—it was just an inflatable. And maybe, just maybe, she could stop spying and start swimming.
