The Poolside Penance

Marcus adjusted his cap—backward, like the cool kids wore—and gripped the bat. Third base. Two outs. Bottom of the ninth, or whatever that baseball lingo meant. Not that it mattered. Coach benched him again.

"You'll get 'em next time, Tiger," his dad yelled from the bleachers, using that nickname Marcus had outgrown in seventh grade.

"Whatever." Marcus slumped on the dugout bench, scrolling through Instagram while his teammates celebrated their victory. Another game, another DNP—Did Not Play.

The walk home took longer than usual. Mrs. G's calico cat, Barnaby, darted across his path. Usually, cats scattered at his approach, but this one froze, yellow eyes locked on his baseball bag.

"What?" Marcus knelt. "You want this?" He pulled out a practice ball, rolled it. Barnaby pounced.

They played fetch all the way to the community pool.

That's when Marcus noticed him—Caleb, the swim team captain, doing laps alone. Same Caleb who sat behind him in pre-calc, whose freckles scattered like constellations across his nose.

"You gonna watch, or join?" Caleb called, shaking water from his hair.

Marcus panicked. He couldn't swim. Like, at all.

"I... uh..."

Barnaby chose that moment to streak toward the pool, chasing a moth. Splash.

"No!" Marcus dove after the cat, fully clothed, baseball cleats and all.

The water swallowed him. Cold. Chlorine stinging his eyes. Arms flailing, legs kicking. Drowning.

Strong hands grabbed his waist. Caleb hauled him up, gasping.

"You okay?"

Marcus coughed up pool water. Barnaby paddled toward the edge, looking offended.

"That cat..." Caleb laughed. "That's the third time this week."

"You know Barnaby?"

"He's basically the pool mascot." Caleb paused. "You know, I could teach you. Swimming, I mean. If you want."

Later, dripping wet, baseball uniform ruined, Marcus realized something: maybe his story wasn't about baseball after all. Maybe it was about finding your own lane—even if it meant taking the plunge first.
