The Poolside Observation

Maya felt like a zombie, her third all-nighter in a row catching up with her during summer break. Her best friend Kai had insisted she come to the country club, claiming there was "major drama" she couldn't miss.

The pool area was packed - seniors taking over the space like they owned everything, freshmen trying way too hard to fit in. Maya spotted Tyler, her crush since seventh grade, playing padel on the court adjacent to the pool. His hair was dripping with sweat, his swing confident and effortless.

"You're literally staring again," Kai whispered, nudging her. "Maybe actually talk to him instead of playing spy from behind your sunglasses?"

Maya's face burned. "I'm not spying. I'm... observing."

"Same thing." Kai rolled their eyes. "You've been watching him like a detective for, what, two years? At this point you know more about his padel game than his actual girlfriend does."

The words hit Maya like a wave. Because it was true - she'd been watching Tyler from the sidelines forever, documenting every detail like some case file. The way he laughed with his head thrown back. How he always let his little sister win at games. His perfect backhand.

But what about Maya? What did she even like besides... watching Tyler like some creepy surveillance operation?

A freshman accidentally knocked into the pool table by the cabana, sending balls rolling everywhere. Maya jumped up to help, laughing with the embarrassed kid as they chased after the balls. For the first time all day, she felt actually present, not just watching from the edges.

Tyler glanced over from the padel court and smiled. Not at her - just smiled at the scene. But something inside Maya shifted.

"You okay?" Kai asked.

Maya took off her sunglasses. "Yeah. I think I'm done spying."

The zombie fatigue lifted as she realized the most interesting thing happening wasn't on the court - it was her finally starting her own story.
