The Pool Where Secrets Drown

The hotel pool was empty at 2 AM. Elena swam laps in the silence, needing the way water distorted reality. She'd been moving through the water for an hour, her body echoing the cycle her mind had been trapped in since she'd found the email.

Her husband's retirement party. The speeches about his thirty years at the firm. The way his boss—that silver-haired fox of a man—had clapped Marcus on the shoulder like a proud father.

Then, back in their room, the notification on Marcus's phone. He'd left it unlocked. The email was from his boss's wife, confirming a transfer. Their joint retirement accounts, drained into offshore accounts she'd never heard of.

That was three hours ago.

A splash from the pool's other end. Elena stopped mid-lap, treading water. A figure in a swim cap emerged, doing backstroke with methodical precision. The hotel's night auditor—she'd seen him at check-in, a young guy with nervous energy and a Dodgers cap.

The same cap she'd seen on the motorcycle parked across from their house for the past month.

The realization hit her: her husband wasn't just embezzling. He'd hired someone. To watch whom? Her? The boss's wife? Everyone?

Elena swam to the ladder, pulled herself out. She grabbed her towel, fished her phone from the pocket. Marcus had texted: "Can't sleep. Where are you?"

She remembered the hat check at the party. Marcus had insisted on taking both their hats, returning with only his own. How long had he been planning his exit? How long hers?

The night auditor reached the ladder, hauled himself out. He didn't look at her, but she felt his attention.

"Nice night for a swim," he said, too casual.

Elena realized then what she'd become: a spy in her own marriage.

"The water's fine," she said. "You should try it."

He froze for a fraction of a second. She walked toward the hotel entrance, wet footprints on the concrete, already planning what she'd tell the FBI.
