The Pool Where Magic Swims
Lily loved the old swimming pool at the bottom of her garden. It wasn't like other pools. This one had mosaic tiles that sparkled like stars, and the water always felt just a little bit magical.
One hot afternoon, Lily was swimming lazy circles when she noticed something strange. A small green figure stood at the pool's edge, watching her with sad eyes. It looked like a tiny zombie, with patchy green skin and stitches, but instead of being scary, it held a bright yellow rubber ducky.
"Hello?" Lily called, swimming closer. The little zombie shuffled its feet nervously.
Suddenly, the water rippled. Rising from the deep end came a magnificent sphinx! She had golden fur and wings that shimmered like rainbows. The sphinx had been sleeping in the pool's magical depths for a hundred years.
"Who disturbs my swimming place?" the sphinx asked, but she sounded more curious than angry.
The little zombie trembled and tried to hide behind a flower pot. "I... I just wanted to swim," it squeaked. "Everyone runs away when they see me."
Lily climbed out of the pool. "You don't look scary to me," she said kindly. "You look lonely."
The sphinx landed softly beside them and smiled. "Appearances can be deceiving. In my hundred years, I've learned that true friends are found in unexpected places."
The zombie's face lit up. "Really? Can we swim together?"
"Yes!" said Lily, grabbing her floaties. "But first, what's your name?"
"Zed," the little zombie replied.
And so they spent the rest of the afternoon swimming—Lily splashing, Zed doing happy cannonballs, and the sphinx diving gracefully like a golden dolphin. They played pool games and shared stories, and the garden echoed with laughter.
As the sun set, Zed hugged his new friends. "I thought I'd never find anyone who wasn't afraid of me."
"The most magical things happen when we give others a chance," said the sphinx wisely.
Lily waved goodbye as Zed shuffled home with his rubber ducky, already planning tomorrow's swimming adventure. She learned that day that friends come in all shapes and sizes—even ones that look a little bit like zombies.
