The Pool That Touched the Sky

poollightningfriend

Maya loved swimming in her backyard pool. Every summer evening, she would splash and dive until the stars came out. But her favorite time was during thunderstorms, when her mom called her inside.

One rainy afternoon, as Maya watched from her bedroom window, something magical happened. A bolt of lightning struck the pool, but instead of fizzling out, it danced across the water like tiny glowing ribbons. The water began to shimmer and sparkle, turning a brilliant shade of blue.

Curious, Maya crept outside. The rain had stopped, but the pool still glowed. When she dipped her toe in, instead of feeling wet, she felt... tingly. Like she was touching a cloud.

Then she saw him—a tiny boy made entirely of crackling yellow light, skating across the pool's surface.

"Hello!" he called, his voice sounding like distant thunder. "I'm Zap!"

Maya gasped. "You're... you're made of lightning!"

"I'm a lightning sprite," Zap explained. "I was sleeping in a cloud when I fell. Your pool caught me!" He did a spinning jump, leaving little sparks on the water. "Want to see where I live?"

Zap took Maya's hand—his grip felt warm and buzzing, like holding a flashlight. Together they stepped onto the pool surface. But instead of sinking, they floated upward, higher and higher, until they were dancing among the clouds.

All around them, other lightning sprites played tag, painting the sky with streaks of gold and purple. They showed Maya how to catch falling stars and weave them into bracelets.

"This is amazing!" Maya laughed. "Can I come back?"

"Only during storms," Zap said. "And only if you promise to be my friend."

"Always!" Maya promised.

As dawn approached, Zap floated her back down to her pool. The water returned to normal, but Maya found something glittering in her palm—a tiny lightning bolt charm that still sparkled with warm light.

Now every storm, Maya waits by the pool. When the first lightning bolt strikes, she knows her friend Zap is calling, ready for another magical adventure above the clouds. And sometimes, when she's lonely, she holds the lightning bolt charm and feels its familiar warmth, reminding her that magic—and friendship—can be found in the most unexpected places.
