The Pool That Grew Fruit

Lila loved visiting her grandmother's house in the countryside. But she had never been allowed to explore the overgrown garden behind the old shed—until one hot summer morning when Grandma handed her a mysterious key.

"This unlocks the gate to the secret garden," Grandma whispered with a twinkle in her eye. "But you must promise to share whatever you find."

Lila's hands trembled as she unlocked the rusty gate. What she found made her gasp. In the middle of the hidden garden stood a magnificent swimming pool, but it wasn't filled with water. Instead, the pool brimmed with glowing, magical liquid that shimmered like liquid sunshine.

Floating on the surface were dozens of papayas, each one bigger than Lila's head and painted with swirls of rainbow colors. They bobbed gently, humming soft melodies.

"Hello there!" a cheerful voice called out.

Lila jumped. An orange was swimming toward her! It had tiny leaf arms and a determined expression.

"I'm Clementine," said the orange, pulling itself onto the pool's edge. "And you've found the Papaya Pool of Wishes!"

Lila's eyes widened. "Papayas can grant wishes?"

"Only papayas from this special pool," Clementine explained. "Each rainbow papaya holds one wish. But here's the rule—you can only wish for something that will make someone else happy."

Lila thought hard. She could wish for toys, or candy, or adventures... but those were just for herself. Then she remembered how sad Grandma looked whenever she spoke of Grandpa, who had passed away before Lila was born.

"I wish Grandma could see Grandpa one more time," Lila whispered, closing her eyes as she touched the largest papaya.

The papaya glowed brighter than ever. Sparkles filled the air, forming the shape of an old man with kind eyes and a gentle smile. Grandma appeared in the garden doorway, tears streaming down her face as she saw the glowing figure.

"Thank you, Lila," Grandma sobbed, hugging her granddaughter tight. "This is the best gift anyone has ever given me."

Clementine the orange winked at Lila. The pool's magic had taught her the most important lesson of all: the best wishes are the ones we make for others. From that day on, Lila visited the secret garden often, not to make wishes for herself, but to help others find their happiness in the Papaya Pool of Wishes.
