The Pool's Secret Spy

Lily pressed her plastic **spy** goggles against her eyes. They were purple with green stripes, and they made her feel invisible. Today was the day she would solve the pool's greatest mystery.

Every Tuesday at 3 PM, a strange figure appeared at the community pool. The other kids called it the pool **zombie**. It would waddle into the shallow end, disappear beneath the surface, and stay underwater for what felt like forever. Its arms would wave weirdly above the surface like seaweed in a current.

Lily had come to investigate.

She tiptoed to the edge of the pool and peered through her spy goggles. There it was! A green swimming cap bobbing near the ladder. Suddenly, the creature surfaced—spitting a stream of **water** from its mouth like a fountain!

Lily gasped and ducked behind a beach chair.

"I see you there," said a voice. It wasn't scary. It sounded like any regular kid.

Lily stood up slowly. The zombie had removed its cap. It was a boy about her age with freckles across his nose.

"You're the pool zombie!" she said.

"My name is Oliver," he smiled. "And I'm not a zombie. I'm practicing for my synchronized **swimming** competition next week. See?" He demonstrated a beautiful swirl, spinning like an underwater ballerina. "The zombie walk is just how I practice holding my breath."

Lily watched, amazed. Oliver moved through the water like magic. "It's beautiful," she whispered.

"Want to learn?" Oliver asked.

Lily nodded, forgetting all about being a spy.

All afternoon, Oliver taught Lily his underwater spins and graceful arm movements. She learned that the scary zombie was actually a kind boy who loved to dance in the water. And Oliver? He found out that having someone **spy** on his practice wasn't so bad after all—especially when that someone became his newest teammate.

Sometimes the scariest mysteries turn out to be the most wonderful friendships, waiting just beneath the surface.
