The Pool Party Zombie Protocol

poolcablepyramidzombierunning

I felt like a literal **zombie** standing at the edge of Jessica's **pool**, clutching my red Solo cup like it was a lifeline. This was it - the first party of junior year, and I was fully prepared to spend three hours pretending to sip water while everyone else lived their best lives.

"You good, Marcus?" David asked, sliding up beside me. His **cable** knit sweater was completely inappropriate for August, but that was David - always making statements.

"Just taking it all in," I lied.

The social **pyramid** was on full display. Jessica and her crew at the shallow end, the athletes dominating the diving board, and the rest of us scattered like filler characters in someone else's movie. I'd spent enough time **running** from these situations to know the drill.

Then something shifted.

A freshman cannonballed into the deep end, sending water everywhere. Jessica squealed. Her perfect hair dripped. And suddenly, nobody looked perfect anymore.

David nudged me. "Wanna make a memory?"

Before I could overthink it, we both jumped.

The water shocked everything awake - my nerves, my confidence, the possibility that maybe I didn't have to be a background character in my own life. When I surfaced, gasping and laughing, Jessica herself floated over.

"Took you long enough," she said, grinning. "We were wondering when you'd join the party."

Turns out, nobody was actually watching me from the sidelines. The only person keeping me in the background was me.

That night, I learned something about **pyramids**: they look impossible from the ground, but once you're in the water, everyone's just swimming together. And **zombies**? They're just people who haven't jumped in yet.

I wasn't **running** anymore. I was exactly where I needed to be - treading water, laughing at something someone said, finally part of the picture instead of watching from the edge.
