The Pool Party Truth Bomb
Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket — another notification she couldn't check while wearing a swimsuit. Her iPhone sat abandoned on her towel like a forbidden fruit, taunting her from across the pool deck.
"You're not still worrying about what Tyler said, are you?" Jenna asked, sliding into the water beside her.
Maya shrugged, letting the cool water calm her racing thoughts. "Maybe. It's just... he called me a goody-goody because I wouldn't skip practice to hang out. Like, following through on commitments is suddenly uncool now?"
"That's such bull," Jenna rolled her eyes. "Tyler's just mad you wouldn't blow off your responsibilities for him. That's actually kinda hot, not gonna lie."
A splash from the deep end interrupted them. Connor, the varsity swim team captain, had just completed what appeared to be a flawless lap. Maya had been secretly crushing on him since September, watching him during swim practice from her lane in the intermediate group. He was everything she wanted to be — confident, talented, and completely unbothered by anyone's opinion.
He climbed out of the pool, water dripping from his dark hair, and grabbed his towel. Their eyes met for approximately 0.7 seconds before Maya ducked underwater to hide her flushing face.
When she surfaced, Jenna was grinning. "Oh my GOD, you like him!"
"Shut up," Maya laughed, splashing water at her friend. "I do not."
"You literally just did a full submarine to avoid eye contact. That's the opposite of not liking him."
Suddenly, Maya's iPhone lit up on her towel. A text from Tyler: "Sorry about earlier. I was being a jerk. Your dedication is actually really admirable."
Jenna peered at the screen. "Well, well. Looks like someone's finally coming to their senses."
Maya smiled, feeling the weight in her chest lighten. Whatever happened with Connor — or didn't happen — she knew one thing for sure: she wasn't going to compromise who she was for anyone else's approval.
"Race you to the other side?" Maya challenged, already pushing off the wall.
"You're so on," Jenna called after her.
As Maya's arms sliced through the water, powerful and free, she realized this was who she was — someone who showed up, who tried hard, who swam toward what she wanted instead of waiting for it to come to her. And honestly? That was more than enough.
