The Pool Party Truth
Maya's beanie was practically glued to her head at Jake's pool party. Underneath, her hair was a disaster—a DIY bleach job gone wrong, turning her curls into a frizzy orange mess that looked like a traffic cone exploded on her head.
"You coming in or what?" Jake called from the deep end, doing a ridiculous cannonball that soaked half the partygoers.
"Maybe later!" Maya yelled back, clutching her red solo cup like it was a lifeline. She'd been dodging the swimming situation for three hours.
Her best friend Chen sauntered over, water dripping from his swim trunks. "You know everyone's literally bearing up under the blazing sun just to hang out with you, right?"
Maya rolled her eyes. "You're so dramatic."
"I'm serious. Lisa's over there asking if you're sick. Jordan thinks you hate pools now. Just take off the hat and swim already."
"It's not the swimming," Maya mumbled. "It's... I did something stupid to my hair."
Chen burst out laughing. "That's it? Bruh, I thought you were sick or something. Maya, nobody cares. Jordan literally showed up with a mullet last month and owned it."
"A mullet intentionally. This is more like... if a highlighter threw up on me."
Chen grabbed her hand. "Come on. If it's that bad, we'll say you're starting a trend. But I swear, no one's gonna care."
Before Maya could protest, Chen yanked her toward the pool. The hat slipped off. A few people glanced over, saw her hair, and went back to their conversations. Lisa waved from the shallow end.
"Finally!" Jake shouted. "Now get in here!"
Maya stood there for a second, waiting for the stares, the whispers, the embarrassment she'd been bearing all afternoon. But nobody was looking. They were just waiting for her to join them.
She jumped in.
The water was perfect, cool and refreshing, washing away three hours of unnecessary anxiety. Chen was right—nobody cared. Sometimes the biggest monsters lived inside your head.
Later, as they all dried off in the sun, Jordan high-fived her. "Orange curls? That's actually sick. Where'd you get it done?"
Maya laughed. "My bathroom. With highlighter dye."
"Classic," Jordan said, and meant it.
