The Pool Party Surprise
Lily loved her backyard pool more than anything. Every summer day, she'd splash and swim until her toes turned wrinkly. But this summer was different. Something strange was happening in her pool.
One morning, Lily peeked through the curtains and gasped. A greenish figure was floating in the water! It moved slowly, arms waving like seaweed in the current.
"A zombie!" Lily whispered, hiding behind the couch. But curiosity bubbled inside her like a fizzy drink.
She crept outside, clutching her lucky orange ball. To her surprise, the figure wasn't scary at all. It was a boy with pale green skin, looking sad and lonely.
"Hi," Lily said softly. "I'm Lily."
The boy blinked slowly. "I'm Zane. Everyone thinks I'm a zombie because I move slowly and my skin looks green. But I'm just different."
Lily noticed Zane loved the water too, gliding smoothly like an otter. "Want to play?"
Zane's face lit up. For the first time all summer, he smiled. They played catch with the orange ball, racing and splashing until the sun began to set.
"Why did you come to my pool?" Lily asked.
"I heard laughter," Zane said. "I haven't had a friend in a long time. Everyone runs away when they see me."
Lily felt her heart squeeze tight. "Well, you have one now. And you're not scary — you're the best swimmer I've ever met!"
That evening, they shared an orange popsicle by the poolside, watching the water turn pink and gold in the sunset. Zane didn't seem so different after all. He just wanted to belong.
From that day on, the zombie in Lily's pool wasn't scary anymore. He was her friend. And Lily learned that sometimes, the scariest things are just the loneliest ones — and a little friendship can turn fear into fun.
