The Pool Party Spy

spypoolbearfoxrunning

I was totally panicking. My first real pool party, and I was hiding behind a lounge chair like a total weirdo. My crush, Jasmine, was across the deck, laughing with her friends in that effortless way that made my stomach do backflips. I felt like a spy watching from the shadows, trying to memorize her laugh and the way she flipped her hair without making it obvious I was staring.

"Yo, Marcus!" My best friend Diego clapped my shoulder, nearly giving me a heart attack. "You've been hovering by the snacks for twenty minutes. You good, bro?"

"I'm just... observing," I muttered, grabbing a handful of chips. "Strategizing."

Diego rolled his eyes. "You're not on a mission, dude. Just talk to her. What's the worst that happens?"

The worst happens when your brain goes blank and you forget how words work.

Then Jasmine started walking toward me, and my heart was running a marathon against my ribs. But before she could reach me, her little brother Toby came barreling through, screeching like a banshee. He tripped over my flip-flops and faceplanted inches from my feet.

"You okay, little man?" I knelt down, helping him up.

Toby sniffled, then whispered conspiratorially, "I was trying to get my stuffed bear back from those Fox kids. They took it and said they'd throw it in the pool if I didn't do their dare."

"Wait, which kids?" I asked, my protective instinct kicking in.

"The Fox twins," he whispered. "They're in the deep end."

The Fox twins — eighth grade bullies who thought they ran everything because their parents owned the local country club. They were currently holding Toby's bear hostage, dangling it over the deep end while their crew of followers laughed.

Something in me snapped. All my anxiety about talking to Jasmine suddenly seemed ridiculous compared to this.

"Hey!" I marched over to the deep end, channeling every ounce of courage I had. "Give it back."

The Fox twins looked shocked that someone was calling them out. "Or what?" one sneered.

"Or I'll tell your mom you're the ones who broke her favorite vase last week," I said, improvising wildly. "I was right outside the clubhouse when it happened. Saw everything."

They froze. I had no idea if I was right, but the bluff worked. They tossed the bear back and took off toward the shallow end like they'd seen a ghost.

Toby tackled my legs in a hug. When I looked up, Jasmine was watching me, smiling.

"That was actually really cool," she said, walking over. "I'm Jasmine, by the way."

"Marcus," I managed, my voice not shaking at all. "And yeah, apparently I'm a bear-rescuing expert now."

She laughed. "Well, Bear-Rescuing Expert Marcus, want to get in the pool? The Fox twins are staying far away, so it's safe."

"Absolutely," I said, finally feeling like myself. "Let's do this."

As I jumped into the cool water, Diego gave me a thumbs-up from across the pool. Sometimes the best moments happen when you stop watching from the sidelines and just jump in. Literally.
