The Pool Party Social Pyramid

Maya's phone buzzed with a notification that made her stomach do somersaults. Jessica's pool party. The invite list had been carefully curated like a social pyramid scheme, and Maya was hovering somewhere near the middle—invited, but definitely not part of the inner circle.

"You going?" asked Leo, leaning against her locker. He'd been running for student council president and actually had a shot at winning, unlike Maya's usual strategy of staying invisible.

"I don't even have a swimsuit that fits," she muttered, which was partially true. The real truth? She hadn't gone swimming since seventh grade, when someone commented on her "weird" stroke technique. The humiliation still stung.

"Come on, it'll be legendary," Leo said. "I heard Jessica's parents installed one of those waterfall things."

The pool party was exactly what Maya expected: popular kids posing by the water like they were filming a music video, massive speakers bumping Spotify's top tracks, and enough tropical punch to fuel a small army. Maya positioned herself safely on the edge of a lounge chair, fully dressed, pretending to be intensely interested in her phone.

Then someone shouted, "Human pyramid time!"

Maya looked up to see Jessica directing her minions like an orchestra conductor. They were actually building a pyramid in the shallow end—five people at the base, three above, two more standing on shoulders, all laughing and splashing. It looked ridiculous and terrifying and weirdly fun.

"We need one more for the top!" Jessica announced, then her gaze landed on Maya. "Hey, Maya's small! She'd be perfect!"

The invitation hung in the humid summer air. Maya's instinct was to retreat, make some excuse about needing to be somewhere, anywhere else. But Leo caught her eye and gave her this tiny nod, like he knew she was overthinking it.

So Maya found herself peeling off her cover-up to reveal a bikini she'd bought on clearance (and honestly, wasn't that bad), stepping into the cool water, and suddenly she was being hoisted onto shoulders, then climbing higher, until she was literally at the top of this precarious, wobbling human pyramid, water dripping everywhere, everyone screaming with laughter.

For like ten seconds, Maya was the highest point at Jessica's party, looking down at the social hierarchy from a completely different angle. Then the whole thing collapsed spectacularly, sending everyone crashing into the water in a tangle of limbs and giggles.

As she surfaced, gasping and laughing so hard her sides hurt, Maya realized she was swimming—actually, properly swimming—toward the snack bar with Leo and Jessica and everyone else, and nobody was watching her stroke technique because they were all too busy being people who'd just crashed a human pyramid together.
