The Pool Party's Secret Guest
Lily loved the swimming pool in her backyard more than anything. Every summer day, she'd dive into the cool blue water, feeling like a mermaid exploring an underwater kingdom.
One hot afternoon, while practicing her cannonballs, Lily noticed something strange. A greenish figure shuffled slowly toward the pool gate. It looked like a zombie from her storybooks—but this zombie wore colorful swim trunks and carried a bright pink pool noodle!
"Hello?" Lily called out, treading water.
The zombie sighed. "Hi. I'm Zed. All the kids run away when they see me. I just wanted to make friends."
Lily smiled. "Do you know how to swim?"
Zed shook his head sadly. "I was hoping someone could teach me."
Just then, Lily's neighbor's pet bull, Buttercup, trotted over. Buttercup was the gentlest bull in the world, with golden fur and big brown eyes. She loved watching Lily swim from the fence.
"Buttercup!" Lily called. "This is Zed. He wants to learn to swim!"
Buttercup lowered her head and nuzzled Zed's hand. The zombie giggled—something zombies rarely did.
"I have an idea!" Lily said. "Buttercup can be our swimming teacher!"
That afternoon, the most magical lesson happened. Zed learned to float with Buttercup cheering from the edge, Lily showed him how to kick his legs, and they played pool noodle jousting until the sun set.
When Zed's mom called him home for dinner, he hugged Lily. "Thank you for not running away."
"Thank you for being brave enough to say hello," Lily replied.
Buttercup mooed in agreement.
From then on, every pool party included a special guest: a zombie who had become the best swimmer in town, and a bull who loved to cheer from the sidelines. Lily learned that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need someone to give them a chance—and that true friendship could be found in the most unexpected places.
