The Pool Party Rescue

Maya's thumbs hovered over her iPhone screen, double-tapping through Grace's Instagram story like it was a classified mission. She'd been lowkey spying on Grace's posts all summer, ever since the incident at Taylor's party. Not in a creepy way—just trying to figure out why Grace had stopped talking to her completely. The algorithm knew her secrets better than her best friend did.

"You're doing it again," said JJ, flopping onto the lounge chair beside her. "The stalking thing. It's weird, bestie."

Maya locked her phone and slid it under her towel. "I'm not stalking. I'm conducting research."

"Whatever you need to tell yourself." JJ cracked open a soda. "This pool party is supposed to be chill, not Detective Maya hour."

The backyard belonged to Grace's cousin, whose family lived on what everyone called "the ranch"—five acres of suburban Texas weirdness. Above the fence, Maya could see the roof of the barn where they kept the animals for the county fair.

Then she heard it—a sound that made everyone freeze. Heavy breathing. Snorting. The unmistakable clomp of hooves.

"Is that..." somebody started.

The wooden gate splintered inward.

A massive bull stood there, steam rising from its shoulders, nostrils flaring like it had personal beef with everyone in the pool area. Someone screamed. Someone else (maybe JJ, honestly) dropped their phone in the water.

Maya didn't think. She grabbed her iPhone from under her towel, thumbed to the ranch playlist her friend had sent, and cranked the volume. Country music blared—apparently bulls hated country? No, that wasn't right.

"THAT'S NOT GOING TO WORK!" someone yelled.

The bull charged.

Maya scrambled up, grabbed the long pool net, and positioned herself between the animal and the group of freshmen cowering near the deep end. Her heart hammered against her ribs like it was trying to escape. She'd never been brave. She'd never been the hero.

But she'd watched enough videos to know animals respected confidence.

"Hey!" she shouted, voice cracking. "You want the net? Come get it!"

The bull skidded to a stop, confused.

From the barn, Grace's cousin came sprinting with a bucket of feed. "Boss! Come here, you drama queen!"

The bull followed the bucket like a puppy.

As the adults secured the gate and everyone calmed down, Grace found Maya by the pool's edge. Her phone had fallen in during the chaos.

"You were amazing," Grace said. "I'm sorry I ghosted you. I was going through stuff, but... you're still the realest person I know."

Maya looked at her waterlogged iPhone, then at Grace. "Cool. Cool cool cool."

"That's all you have to say?"

Maya grinned. "I'm still processing how I almost fought a bull. I need new material for my Instagram bio."

By the time they left, Maya had a new phone number, her first solid plan with Grace in months, and a story that would live in group chat legend forever. The iPhone could be replaced. The friendship? That was worth standing up to a bull.
