The Pool Party Pyramid Scheme
The Friday before sophomore year, Emma found herself at the bottom of the social pyramid again. Jenna's pool party was THE event of the summer, and Emma's crush, Ryan, would definitely be there.
"You're actually going?" Maya asked, flopping onto Emma's bed. Her cat, Mittens, immediately abandoned his nap to investigate the new human. "Last time you went to one of Jenna's parties, you spent three hours hiding in the bathroom."
"That was freshman year," Emma said, checking her reflection in the mirror. "I'm different now. More confident. Plus, I've been swimming laps at the Y since June. I'm practically athletic."
Maya snorted. "You nearly drowned during lessons last summer."
"Details."
When they arrived, the pool area was already packed. Jenna stood at the shallow end like the queen of her pyramid, surrounded by her inner circle. Ryan was there, laughing at something Jenna said. Emma's stomach did that annoying fluttery thing.
"Hey, isn't that the fox from behind your house?" Maya whispered, pointing toward the fence.
Sure enough, a sleek orange fox was watching them through the wooden slats, almost like it was judging their life choices.
"Maybe it's my spirit animal," Emma joked, though her hands were shaking.
The fox vanished just as Jenna spotted them. "Emma! You came!" Her enthusiasm felt about as genuine as a three-dollar bill. "We were just about to play chicken fights in the pool. Ryan needs a partner."
The invitation was both a dream come true and absolute nightmare fuel. Emma's brain screamed ABORT MISSION but her mouth said, "Sure."
Ryan lifted her into the pool like she weighed nothing. His hands were warm against her waist, and for a second, everything felt like a movie montage. Then came the actual chicken fighting, which mostly involved Emma trying not to fall while Ryan whispered directions like "lean left" and "trust me" against her ear.
They lost immediately to Jenna and her varsity football boyfriend, but Ryan was still smiling when they surfaced. "You're actually really fun," he said, water dripping from his hair.
Later, wrapped in a towel and watching the sun set behind the trees, Emma spotted the fox again. It sat alone on the hill, calm and unbothered by the social pyramids and pool party drama.
"You know what?" Maya said, following her gaze. "Foxes are basically the introverts of the animal kingdom. They're smart, they keep to themselves, and they're honestly kind of badass."
Emma thought about that, about how she'd spent the whole day worrying about climbing a pyramid that didn't actually matter. Ryan had invited her to get bubble tea tomorrow. Jenna had barely even spoken to her after chicken fights. And somewhere, a cat was probably judging everyone involved.
"Yeah," Emma said, feeling lighter than she had all summer. "I think I'm okay with being a fox."
