The Pool Party Pyramid

The invitation said 'pool party' but everyone knew it was really a social hierarchy test. Maya stood by the edge of the infinity pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. She'd only been invited because her friend Zoe had begged the host, Chloe, to include her.

'I'm so glad you made it!' Zoe appeared, already wet from a dip. 'Chloe's brother set up a padel court in the backyard. It's actually legit.' Zoe nudged her. 'You should play. You'd crush it.'

Maya forced a smile. 'Maybe later.'

But later, Chloe gathered everyone around. 'Let's make this interesting. Padel tournament—winners get primo pool seats for fireworks.'

The unspoken pyramid formed instantly. Chloe and her elite squad versus the rest of them. Maya's stomach did backflips. She hadn't played since summer camp last year, but Zoe was already signing them both up.

'This is fine,' Zoe whispered, but her fingers tapped nervously against her racquet. 'Just... don't overthink it.'

Game point. Maya's opponents: Chloe and her TikTok-famous bestie. The ball flew toward her—she swung without thinking, connecting with a satisfying *thwack*. It sailed over Chloe's head, landing perfectly in the corner.

'Shot!' someone yelled. The pyramid shattered, just like that. Zoe screamed and grabbed Maya in a dripping hug.

'No way,' Chloe said, but she was smiling—actually smiling. 'Where'd you learn to play like that?'

'Summer camp,' Maya said, suddenly taller. 'You should come next year. If you can handle not being in charge for a week.'

Chloe laughed. 'Touché.'

Floating in the pool later, watching fireworks reflect across the water, Maya realized something: sometimes you had to knock down the pyramid to see who'd help you build something better.
