The Pool Party Pyramid

Maya stood in front of her mirror for the third time, fingers hovering over her newly straightened **hair**. Two hours of work, and she still wasn't sure if it said "chill summer vibes" or "trying too hard." Her phone buzzed — Jordan's party started in twenty minutes, and if she showed up late, she'd be stuck at the bottom of the social **pyramid** again.

She grabbed her phone, but the charging **cable** snagged on her backpack, yanking a whole stack of magazines off her desk. Typical.

When she arrived at Jordan's house, the pool area was already packed. Seniors lounged on the prime deck chairs, forming the top of the pyramid, while everyone else clustered around the snacks. Maya spotted her best friend Riley near the diving board, looking miserable.

"What's wrong?" Maya asked, dropping her towel on a semi-decent spot.

Riley groaned. "Jason just dared me to jump off the roof into the **pool**. He says everyone's doing it, but I'm pretty sure that's illegal."

"Sounds like him," Maya said, watching Jason — currently holding court with three juniors — demonstrate for some freshmen who looked equal parts terrified and impressed. "Don't do it. It's not worth breaking your leg just to impress people who won't remember your name next year."

But then she spotted something else: Jordan's little brother Cody, about ten, standing on the roof's edge, looking determined. And then he slipped.

Maya didn't think. She just moved, sprinting across the deck, leaping into the water just as Cody fell. They surfaced together, sputtering, her carefully straightened hair plastered to her face. The whole party went silent.

Cody laughed, shaking water from his ears. "That was awesome!"

"Yeah," Maya said, realizing her hair was ruined, her makeup was gone, and somehow, none of it mattered. "Pretty awesome."

Later, wrapped in towels by the snack table, Riley nudged her. "You know, I think the social pyramid just collapsed. Jason's been talking about how cool you are all night."

Maya grinned, shaking wet hair from her eyes. "Let him **bear** witness to this — I'm done climbing pyramids. I'm making waves instead."
