The Pool Party Pyramid

Maya stared at her iphone screen, thumb hovering over Jake's profile. One tap. That's all it would take to DM him. But her finger froze. The notification bubbles were already stacking up—her friends were blowing up the group chat about Tyler's party tonight.

"You coming?" Brianna had texted. "Tyler's parents got that new padel court installed. It's gonna be elite."

Maya's stomach did that familiar flip. She'd been trying to climb the social pyramid since freshman year, and this party was supposedly her in. But swimming? In front of everyone? No thanks.

She caught her reflection in the mirror. Her swimsuit from last summer barely fit. The idea of standing there in a bikini while people judged—hard pass.

"Maya!" her mom called from downstairs. "You're not still stressing about tonight, are you?"

Maya groaned and tossed her iphone onto her bed. Maybe she could fake sick. Or say her cousin was in town. Literally anything but showing up to a pool party where she'd be expected to be all chill and confident while simultaneously not drowning in social awkwardness.

But then her phone buzzed again. Jake. Hey, heard you're coming tonight. You play padel?

Her thumbs moved before she could overthink. Not really lol but I'm down to try.

His reply came instantly. Perfect. I'll teach you.

Maya's heart did this weird flutter thing. Okay, fine. She was going.

Three hours later, she stood by the water's edge, clutching a racket like her life depended on it. The pool lights reflected off the surface, making everything shimmer like something out of a music video. People were laughing, music was bumping, and somewhere someone cannonballed into the water, sending waves rippling toward the edge.

"Maya!" Jake waved from the padel court. "Come here!"

She took a breath and walked over, trying to look like she belonged. Which she totally did. Obviously.

The game was chaotic but fun. Maya missed half the balls but laughed anyway. Jake was patient, cracking jokes every time she whiffed a shot. "That's definitely going in the highlight reel," he said after she somehow managed to hit herself in the ankle with the racket.

Later, when they took a break and sat by the pool, feet dangling in the water, the conversation shifted from awkward small talk to something real.

"I was actually gonna skip tonight," Maya admitted. "Figured I'd be terrible at padel and everyone would judge."

Jake raised an eyebrow. "You think anyone here actually knows how to play? Tyler's been swinging at air all night and nobody cares."

Maya looked around. Tyler was indeed on the court, enthusiastically missing everything while his friends cheered him on. The social pyramid she'd spent so much time worrying about didn't seem so steep from down here.

"Wanna go swimming?" Jake asked. "Like, actually swimming? Not just standing by the edge looking cool?"

Maya grinned. "Bet."

She jumped in, phone left safely on a towel, social anxiety dissolved in the water. The pyramid could wait. Tonight, she was just swimming.
