The Pool Party Pyramid

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her solo cup like it was a lifeline.

Across the water, Taylor and the popular crew lounged on floaties in their matching bikinis, forming what basically amounted to the social pyramid of sophomore year.

Maya's hair had already graduated to "simultaneously seen a ghost and been electrocuted" status, courtesy of the June humidity. Perfect for blending into the patio furniture.

"That boy over there's been staring at you," whispered Jordan, nudging her.

Jordan, Maya's ride-or-die since sixth grade, her absolute dog when it came to loyalty.

"Which one?" Maya asked.

"The one by the diving board. Tall, got that floppy hair thing going on."

Caleb. Taylor's ex. The one whose friends spread all that bull about Maya being "obsessed" with him back in February, when literally all she'd done was accidentally like his Instagram post from 2019 during a 3 AM scrolling session.

"That's a no from me, chief." Maya took a sip of something that tasted like sunscreen and despair.

Jordan shrugged. "He seems chill though. Asked about you earlier."

"Asked what? If I was still plotting to steal his DNA?"

"Dunno. Didn't catch the whole thing."

Jordan's eyes widened suddenly. "Oh damn, Taylor's headed this way."

The pyramid was mobilizing.

Maya considered faking a phone call. Faking choking. Faking literally anything that wasn't this conversation.

But Taylor didn't even look at her.

"Caleb wants to talk to you," she said, voice bored. "He's by the shallow end."

"He literally blocked me on everything after the rumor thing."

"Unblocked you yesterday. Said his cousin told him the whole story was bull."

Taylor flipped her hair and walked away without waiting for a response.

Maya stood there, brain buffering.

"Well?" Jordan elbowed her. "Are you gonna go talk to him or stand there holding up the diving board?"

Caleb was indeed watching from the pool edge, shirtless and increasingly nervous-looking. The pool lights cast rippling reflections across his face.

Maya smoothed her frizzy hair.

"Guess I'm about to find out if this is a setup or the beginning of a very weird enemies-to-lovers arc."

"At least you'll have content for your diary," Jordan called as Maya walked toward the pool.

Caleb smiled as she approached.

"Hey."

"Hey."

And just like that, the pyramid didn't seem so unclimbable after all.
