The Pool Party Protocol

Maya's legs felt like jelly as she stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The annual end-of-school pool party. The ultimate social minefield of freshman year. Everyone who was anyone would be there, including Skylar—the senior who'd been flirting with her in chemistry lab.

"You got this," her best friend Kae whispered, but Maya wasn't convinced.

Then came the chaos. Buster, her family's elderly golden retriever, somehow escaped through the backyard fence and came charging toward the party like a furry torpedo. Maya's mom, desperately running after him, was screaming something about spinach dip being all over the carpet.

"Buster! No!" Maya yelled, but it was too late. The dog cannonballed straight into the pool, creating a splash that drenched Skylar and half the popular crowd. Silence. Then laughter. Not the mean kind—the genuine, bellyaching kind that somehow made everything less terrifying.

Skylar wiped water from their eyes and grinned at Maya. "Your dog just made the most epic entrance ever."

Suddenly, the pressure was gone. Maya found herself actually laughing, really laughing, for the first time all semester. Later, as the sun set and everyone sat around eating pizza (with spinach leaves because Kae was on a health kick), Skylar sat beside her.

"I was running circles around this party all night trying to look cool," Skylar admitted. "Then your dog showed me how it's done."

Maya realized then that maybe the bear of social pressure she'd been carrying all year wasn't so scary after all. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the best stories. And sometimes, you just need a golden retriever to cannonball into your life to remind you that perfection is overrated.

"Next time," Maya said, "we're letting Buster plan the entrance."

Skylar laughed. "Deal."
