The Pool Party Protocol
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, obsessively checking her reflection. The vitamin gummies on the counter mocked her — her mom swore they'd help her skin, but right now, nothing could fix the knot in her stomach. Tonight was Jordan's pool party. The pool party. The one that would define her entire sophomore year social standing.
Her phone buzzed. Sasha, her ride slash best friend since seventh grade:
"u coming?? every1's already here jordan literally just asked where u were"
"omw," Maya typed back, though she wasn't moving. Not yet.
Last year, Maya had been known as "goldfish girl" after her science fair project about fish memory and retention. Everyone had thought it was cute at first, until it wasn't. Until it became the thing that defined her, the thing people whispered about in hallways, the reason she couldn't get a date to homecoming.
She smoothed her dress for the hundredth time. She was reinventing herself tonight. New Maya. Confident Maya. Maya who didn't obsessively memorize party guest lists beforehand like she was studying for a final exam.
When she finally arrived, the backyard was already transformed. String lights crisscrossed above the pool, casting everything in a warm glow. Jordan's golden retriever, Rex, was doing laps around the food table. And then she saw him.
Caleb. The guy she'd been lowkey obsessed with since basketball season. The one with the crooked smile and the way he actually listened when people talked.
And he was talking to Chloe. Perfect, effortless Chloe, who floated through social situations like they were made specifically for her. Maya felt that familiar tightening in her chest, the same way she'd felt when her goldfish had died and she'd realized too late she'd forgotten to feed it for three days. That paralyzed feeling of being not enough.
"Hey!" Sasha appeared beside her, shoving a red solo cup into her hand. "You made it!" She lowered her voice. "Also, Caleb and Chloe? Not a thing. I heard him telling Lucas he thinks she's, quote, 'kind of a lot.' Unquote."
Maya blinked. "Really?"
"Fox." Sasha nodded sagely. "He plays it cool. Doesn't let anyone see his cards. Classic fox behavior."
"Since when are you an expert on fox behavior?" Maya couldn't help smiling.
"Since I started watching actual nature documentaries instead of just Netflix. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about."
The rest of the night blurred into laughter and pool splashes, into Maya actually talking to Caleb and discovering he was awkward and funny and liked the same weird YouTube channels she did. Into Chloe almost falling into the pool fully dressed and everyone laughing with her, not at her.
Later, as Maya lay in her bed replaying every conversation, her phone lit up with a message from an unknown number.
"hey this is caleb from the party lol sasha gave me ur number. wanted 2 say i had a really good time talking 2 u. maybe we could hang out sometime?"
Maya stared at her screen, her heart doing this weird fluttery thing that definitely wasn't just the vitamin gummies kicking in. New Maya, she thought. Confident Maya. Maya who took chances.
She typed back, "yeah id love that 😊" and hit send before she could overthink it.
Outside her window, something moved in the bushes — a fox, sleek and golden, pausing for just a moment before slipping away into the night. Maya watched it go, feeling like maybe, just maybe, she was finally becoming the person she'd always wanted to be.
