The Pool Party Protocol
Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The popular kids floated on inflatables, their laughter echoing across the water. She'd spent two hours perfecting her beach waves and convincing herself she could actually pull off this being-social thing.
"Hey, new girl!" Chloe called from the pool float. "Wanna try this? My mom got it at some fancy market."
A slice of **papaya** landed in the water beside Maya. Everyone watched. This was it—the initiation. The test. The moment that would determine if Maya Garcia would survive freshman year as someone interesting or fade into background-character status.
"It's literally the best fruit ever," Chloe insisted, pushing her oversized sunglasses up her nose. "Super exotic."
Maya stared at the floating slice. Papaya at a pool party? Weird, but saying no would be social suicide. She took a bite, and her face did something involuntary that made the entire pool deck crack up.
"That's the expression!" Someone yelled. "Classic papaya face!"
But then came a splash. A tiny orange **goldfish** darted away from Maya's feet, clearly someone's abandoned carnival prize now living its best life in the deep end.
"Is that..." Maya pointed, and suddenly everyone was crowded around the edge, watching the little fish thrive in its new kingdom.
"That's literally the most metal thing ever," Chloe said, sliding off her float. "We should name it Beyoncé."
They spent the rest of the afternoon creating an entire mythology for Beyoncé the goldfish, and Maya? She accidentally started something. A legend. A tiny goldfish that became the mascot of their friend group.
Later, floating on her back under the stars, Maya realized something: fitting in wasn't about perfecting the protocol. It was about being there for the weird moments—the papaya faces, the goldfish discoveries, the laughter that hurt your stomach.
Her phone buzzed. A group chat notification: "Beyoncé Defense Squad 💅✨"
Maya smiled. She'd arrived alone, but she was leaving with a squad. And okay, maybe papaya was still suspicious, but this? This was exactly what summer was supposed to feel like.
