The Pool Party Protocol

Maya stood at the edge of Greyson's inground pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. This was it — the party that could make or break her social existence. The invitation had been weirdly specific: "Wear your best swimsuit. Real swim only."

She'd practiced her cannonball in her bathtub. She'd Googled "how to look effortless at pool parties." But nothing prepared her for the actual scene before her: every popular kid from sophomore year, several seniors she'd only admired from afar, and somehow, a whole aesthetic setup with actual palm trees in planters framing the pool deck like they were in Malibu, not suburban Ohio.

"Maya! You made it!" Greyson's voice cut through the chatter. He was shirtless, obviously, dripping chlorinated water like he was some kind of swimming deity. "Get in here!"

Before she could respond, his Golden Retriever, Buster, came tearing across the deck with what looked like a plastic bag in his mouth. The dog skidded on the wet concrete, tumbled into the pool with a spectacular splash, and suddenly there was a collective gasp.

"THAT'S MY GOLDFISH!" some junior screamed, pointing at the bag now floating open in the shallow end. "That's Cosmic Mango! He was my emotional support fish for finals week!"

Maya reacted without thinking. She dropped her phone (thank god for waterproof cases), dove in fully clothed, and somehow managed to scoop the tiny orange fish into her hands before it could be swept into the drain. She surfaced, gasping, palm cupped around the frantic little creature like she was holding something precious.

The entire pool deck went silent. And then Greyson started laughing. Not mean laughing — the real kind, bent at the waist, hair dripping everywhere. "Did you just save a goldfish from a dog while wearing jeans?"

"Emotional support fish," Maya corrected, carefully wading to the edge to transfer Cosmic Mango back to his grateful owner. "Those are sacred."

"You're officially legendary," Greyson said, grinning at her like she'd just won the Olympics. "Also, you're soaking wet. Come borrow my sister's swimsuit."

And just like that, Maya found herself in the deep end, surrounded by people who'd always seemed untouchable, finally understanding that sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. Cosmic Mango swam happily in his restored bowl. Buster napped in the sun. And Maya — finally, genuinely — swam.
