The Pool Party Paradox

Maya's heart did that nervous flutter thing as she stood at the edge of Jake's pool, clutching her iPhone like it was a lifeline. The seventh-grade end-of-year party. Everyone was there.

"You coming in or what?" Jake called from the water, grinning like he owned the world.

Maya hesitated. Her phone buzzed - another DM from Chloe. The group chat was going wild with inside jokes she didn't understand. Why was socializing so exhausting?

Suddenly she noticed it: a small sphinx statue perched on the garden wall, watching everyone like some ancient judgmental Egyptian. It reminded her of Mr. Henderson's English class and that whole unit on riddles and mythology.

"Hey Maya," Chloe said, swimming over to the edge. "You gonna join us or just lurk?" She said it with that fake-sweet tone that made Maya's stomach twist.

"I'm good," Maya mumbled, even though she wasn't. She felt like everyone was speaking a language she'd barely learned, full of slang and subtle shade she couldn't quite decode.

Her phone buzzed again. Jake had posted a story - everyone in the pool, laughing, living their best lives. The caption read: "squad = fam" with way too many heart emojis.

The sphinx seemed to mock her. What was the riddle here? How to be cool without losing herself? How to swim without drowning?

Maya made a split-second decision. She set her iPhone on a towel (carefully, like it was precious cargo) and cannonballed into the pool.

The water swallowed her screams. When she surfaced, sputtering and laughing, Jake was grinning. Chloe actually smiled. For the first time all night, Maya felt real. The sphinx could keep its secrets - she was done overthinking everything.

"Finally!" Jake called.

Maya dove back under. Sometimes you had to stop asking questions and just jump in.
