The Pool Party Papaya Test

I stood at the edge of the POOL, clutching my phone like a lifeline. My CAT, Mochi, was probably asleep on my bed right now, living her best life while I was dying inside.

"Come on, bro! The water's sick!" Tyler yelled. He was the BULL of this party—loud, confident, apparently allergic to shirts. All night he'd been recounting his BASEBALL "glory days" from middle school like they happened yesterday.

I'm not gonna lie, I was shook. Everyone seemed so comfortable in their skin, and I was over here calculating how long I could avoid getting wet before someone noticed I was being weird.

"Try this," Sasha said, appearing beside me with a plate of PAPAYA slices. "My aunt grew them. They're actually fire."

I stared at the fruit like it was an alien artifact. "Is that...papaya?"

"Don't knock it 'til you try it." She popped a piece in her mouth. "We're all doing new things tonight, right?"

Something about her vibe made me pause. Sasha had been quiet all night, and suddenly I realized—she was nervous too.

"You afraid of the water?" she asked, not mean, just curious.

I sighed. "I'm afraid of looking stupid."

She nodded slowly. "Me too. But watch this." She walked to the pool's edge and did the most ungraceful cannonball in history—arms flailing, splash minimal, zero finesse.

Everyone stared. Then someone clapped. Then someone laughed—not mean laughing, but real laughing. Sasha surfaced, grinning.

"Your turn, coward."

So I jumped. Not gracefully. Not cool. Just jumped. And you know what? The water was actually sick.

Later, sitting on pool chairs with papaya-sticky fingers, Sasha and I talked about everything and nothing. Tyler turned out to be insecure about his height. The BASEBALL stories were exaggerated. The BULL persona was just armor.

Sometimes you just need someone to do an awkward cannonball first.
