The Pool Party Panic
Maya's phone buzzed with the invite: **Pool** Party @ Jake's house. 3 PM. Bring swimsuit.
Her stomach did that thing where it felt like someone was squeezing it like a stress ball. Jake—the Jake who'd sat behind her in bio since September, whose laugh sounded like sunshine, who had absolutely no idea she existed—was having a pool party. And somehow, she'd made the guest list.
"You're going, right?" Chloe demanded, flopping onto Maya's bed. "Everyone's gonna be there. Even Jake's friends from North." She paused. "Rumor has it he's planning something special."
Maya rolled onto her back. "What if I look ridiculous? What if I can't swim? What if—"
"You've been on swim team since seventh grade, Maya. You'll be fine."
But three hours later, standing at the edge of Jake's backyard **pool** in a bikini that felt way too revealing, Maya felt anything but fine. Her friends had already jumped in, leaving her alone on the concrete, clutching her towel like a lifeline.
"Maya!" Jake waved from across the pool. "Get in! The **water**'s perfect!"
This was it. Her chance. But as she moved toward the steps, her foot caught on someone's discarded flip-flop. She went **running** forward—not gracefully, not heroically, but in full slow-motion disaster mode.
Time stretched. She saw Jake's eyes widen. She saw the **water** rushing toward her face. She saw her entire social life flashing before her eyes.
She hit the **pool** with a splash that could probably be heard in the next zip code.
underwater, everything was muffled and peaceful. For a second, she just stayed there, suspended. Then someone grabbed her arm and hauled her up.
"You okay?" Jake. His hair was wet, droplets clinging to his eyelashes. "That was... pretty legendary."
She wiped her face. "Legendary embarrassing?"
"Legendary EPIC." He laughed, and it sounded exactly like sunshine. "I was gonna ask if you wanted to play chicken, but after that entrance? You're already the champion."
The rest of the party blurred into wet clothes and chlorine and Jake's hand on her arm and the way he kept looking at her like she was something special. By the time her mom picked her up, Maya's phone was already buzzing with texts from the group chat.
Chloe: "Jake literally won't stop talking about your 'entrance'"
Jake: "Same time next week? The pool's not going anywhere."
Maya stared at the screen until her vision blurred. Then she typed back:
"I'll be there."
