The Pool Party Panic
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in her curls. The humidity had already made her hair expand to three times its normal volume. She looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Again.
"You coming, or what?" her best friend Jules yelled from downstairs. "Everyone's gonna be at Tyler's pool party. Like, literally everyone."
Maya's stomach did backflips. The thought of a swimsuit. A pool. All those people seeing her...
The pool shimmered like liquid diamond when they arrived. Laughter echoed off the fence, and somewhere a speaker thumped with bass that vibrated in Maya's chest. She spotted Tyler immediately—of course he looked effortless, gliding through the water like he was part fish.
"Hey! You made it!" He waved, water droplets flying from his hair like crystals. "Come in!"
Maya's feet moved on autopilot toward the edge. Then she saw her. Brianna. The girl who'd made freshman year miserable with whispered comments about Maya's hair, her clothes, her everything.
Brianna lounged on a pool float like a queen on her throne, her blonde slicked back perfectly. "Maya!" she called out, her sugary-sweet voice making Maya's skin prickle. "Love what you did with your...hair. Very. Exploratory."
A few people snickered. Maya's face burned. She wanted to disappear. To melt into the concrete and never come out.
But then something in her snapped. Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was just...tiredness. Whatever.
"Actually," Maya said, her voice steadier than she felt, "I'm going for the electrocuted-chic look. It's trending on TikTok. You wouldn't understand."
Brianna's smile faltered. The snickering stopped.
"Anyway," Maya continued, her confidence growing, "I'm here to swim, not perform for an audience. So excuse me."
She pulled her cover-up off and dove into the pool. The cool water swallowed her, washing away the sticky heat and the fear. When she surfaced, gasping and grinning, Tyler was waiting.
"That was kinda legendary," he said, paddling closer. "Brianna's been talking smack all summer. You're the first person who actually...you know. Called her on her bull."
Maya treaded water, feeling lighter than she had in months. Her hair was a wet, curly halo around her face. Whatever.
"Sometimes," she said, splashing water at him, "you just gotta jump in. Hair disaster or not."
Tyler laughed and splashed back. The sun sparkled on the ripples between them. For the first time all summer, Maya felt exactly right.
