The Pool Party of Unexpected Friends
Lily was so excited for her pool party! The sun sparkled on the blue water, and colorful floats bobbed everywhere. She'd invited everyone from her class. Everyone except Zara.
Zara was different. Her skin was pale green, she moved a bit slowly, and she moaned instead of speaking clearly. The other kids called her "zombie girl" and made scary faces when she walked by. They said zombies only wanted to brains.
But today, as Lily's mom brought out the watermelon, Zara appeared at the gate. She shuffled forward, holding something behind her back.
"Pool?" Zara asked hopefully.
Before Lily could answer, her friend Tommy yelled, "No zombies allowed! They'll turn us all into zombies!"
Suddenly, a huge shadow fell over the backyard. Everyone gasped. It was Bruno—the gentle bear who lived in the woods behind Lily's house! He usually only came out at dusk.
Bruno lumbered toward the pool, carrying something shiny in his furry paws. He stopped right in front of Zara and gently placed the object at her feet.
It was a beautiful silver whistle.
"Zara helped me," Bruno rumbled softly. "Last winter, I was stuck in a ravine. Zara heard me crying. She stayed by my side for three days, bringing me berries and keeping me warm with her sweater. She never left me."
The pool went silent. Lily's eyes grew wide.
"Zara isn't scary," Bruno continued. "She's the kindest friend I've ever known. She may be different, but different doesn't mean bad."
Zara smiled shyly, revealing she wasn't scary at all—just a little girl who happened to look different.
Lily jumped up. "Zara, do you want to play?"
For the first time ever, Zara grinned from ear to ear. "Yes!"
They all swam together—zombie girl, bear, and every kid from the class. They played pool volleyball and had a splashing contest. Bruno even let everyone slide down his furry back into the water!
That day, Lily learned something wonderful: true friends don't look a certain way. They show up when you need them, stay by your side, and have hearts full of kindness. And sometimes, the most unexpected friends make the best pool parties ever.
