The Pool Party Incident
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, gripping her iphone like it was her only lifeline. The summer bash at Jordan's house was supposed to be her chance to finally break into the popular crowd, but instead she was hovering near the snack table, watching everyone else have the time of their lives.
"You gonna stand there all night or actually get in?" Jordan called out, doing a cannonball that sent water everywhere. Maya flinched as droplets hit her phone—her dad would literally kill her if anything happened to it.
She forced a laugh. "Just warming up!"
But then it happened. Baxter, Jordan's massive golden retriever, came tearing out of nowhere, chasing a tennis ball like his life depended on it. Maya tried to dodge, but her flip-flops betrayed her. She stumbled backward, and—NO—her iphone slipped from her fingers and splashed into the pool.
Time seemed to stop. Everyone froze. The phone sank slowly, like a tiny, expensive Titanic.
"My life is over," Maya whispered, ready to die of embarrassment right there.
But then something surprising happened. Jordan dove in, fully clothed, and fished out the phone. "Dude, my bad about Baxter. He's basically a chaos demon." She handed it to Maya, water dripping everywhere. "But hey, at least now you have an excuse to hang with the cool kids—we can put it in rice at my place."
The other teens laughed, but not meanly. Like, actually genuinely.
"Yeah, Maya!" someone called. "Rice party at Jordan's!"
For the first time all night, Maya felt herself relax. Maybe fitting in wasn't about being perfect or having the right moment. Maybe it was about awkward disasters that everyone pretended weren't awkward, and golden retrievers ruining everything, and popular kids diving into pools to save strangers' phones.
"Fine," Maya said, grinning. "But only if there's pizza."
"Obviously." Jordan winked. "What kind of host do you think I am?"
As they all headed inside, Maya realized her phone might be waterlogged, but her social life? Finally thriving.
