The Pool Party Identity Crisis
Maya stood at the edge of Chloe's backyard pool, clutching her solo cup of lukewarm soda like it was a lifeline. The entire baseball team was there, sprawled across lounge chairs like they owned the place, their varsity jackets scattered across patio furniture. The invitation had said "pool party" but Maya was beginning to realize this was actually a subtle social minefield.
"You coming in or what?" called Tyler from the deep end, splashing water droplets that caught the afternoon sun. He was the starting pitcher and somehow made everything look effortless, including existing.
Maya's mind flashed to her room at home, where her pet goldfish, Bubbles, probably thought she'd abandoned him. Bubbles didn't care about varsity jackets or who was dating whom. Bubbles just wanted his flakes and to stare contemplatively at the plastic castle. Sometimes Maya envied that simplicity.
"I'm good," she managed, though her voice cracked. Someone snickered.
The truth was, Maya had been dodging baseball games all semester. Her dad kept suggesting she try out for the team. "You've got a good arm, kiddo." But the idea of standing on a pitcher's mound with everyone watching made her stomach do backflips.
"She's scared she'll mess up her makeup," someone whispered.
Maya set her cup down on a side table with deliberate care. She wasn't scared of water. She wasn't scared of messing up her appearance. She was scared of being seen, really seen, and found wanting.
Bubbles would be disappointed in her.
Without thinking it through, Maya kicked off her flip-flops. The pool deck was warm under her feet. She remembered what her goldfish did every time she approached the tank – he swam to the front, pressed against the glass, unafraid of whatever came next.
The water hit her like liquid adrenaline.
She surfaced sputtering to total silence. Then Tyler grinned. "About time."
Maya wiped water from her eyes, feeling something shift inside her chest. Maybe next week she'd stop by the baseball field. Just to watch. Bubbles would probably approve.
