The Pool Party Crash

Maya's phone buzzed with the eleventh notification about Jessica's pool party. The one everyone who was anyone would be at. The one Maya was definitely not invited to.

"You going?" texts had been flooding in all week. Maya's thumbs hovered over the keyboard. No, she wasn't going. Why would she be? She'd barely spoken to Jessica since the Great Cafeteria Incident of freshman year.

But then she spotted Brenda – her neighbor's cat – perched on the backyard fence, eyeing Maya like she knew something Maya didn't. Brenda was notorious for escaping into other people's yards. Including Jessica's.

"Oh no," Maya muttered, watching the cat leap gracefully into Jessica's perfectly manicured backyard. Right toward the pool area.

Maya grabbed her phone, ready to call her neighbor, but then paused. This was it. This was her excuse. A legitimate reason to walk into that party like she belonged there. "Sorry, just chasing my escaped cat."

She slipped on her flip-flops and marched next door, heart already doing that annoying fluttery thing it did when she had to socially interact with popular people.

The backyard was exactly what Maya expected – twinkling lights, music playing just loud enough to be vibe-y but not conversation-killing, and a cluster of gorgeous people in swimsuits that Maya could never pull off. And there, standing on the diving board like she owned it, was Brenda.

"Is that... a cat?" Jessica asked, her confused expression giving Maya an unexpected surge of satisfaction.

"Yeah, she's kind of an escape artist," Maya said, surprising herself with how casual she sounded. "Brenda, get down from there."

The cat glared at Maya, then at the water, then back at Maya. With what looked suspiciously like a smirk, Brenda jumped. Not away from the pool, but directly into it.

Chaos erupted. Someone started laughing. Someone else started filming. And before Maya could process the absurdity of what was happening, she'd kicked off her flip-flops and dove in after the cat, fully clothed.

The water was perfect – cool and shocking all at once. Maya surfaced with a sputtering Brenda clamped to her shoulder like a angry, wet fur jacket. The whole party had gone silent.

"Well," Maya said, pushing wet hair out of her eyes, "that happened."

Jessica started laughing. Not mean-girl laughing, but actual genuine laughter. Soon everyone was joining in, and suddenly Maya wasn't the awkward neighbor crashing the party. She was the girl who'd jumped into a pool fully dressed to save a cat.

"You want a towel?" Jessica asked. "And maybe a dry shirt?"

"Yeah," Maya said, realizing she was actually smiling. "That would be great."

Brenda shook herself off, spraying water everywhere, and Maya found herself thinking that sometimes the best moments happen when you stop overthinking and just dive in.
