The Pool Party Catastrophe
Maya's phone buzzed with the notification that would change everything. *POOL PARTY @ Tyler's house. Saturday. Bring swimsuit. DON'T BE AWKWARD.*
Maya stared at her ceiling, stomach doing backflips. Tyler's pool parties were legendary — the social event of the season, the kind that could make or break your entire high school existence. And she, Maya Chen, certified socially awkward human, had actually been invited.
"You're going, right?" Jenna asked through the phone that night. Jenna had been her best friend since sixth grade, back when they'd bonded over shared misery in gym class. Jenna was cool. Jenna knew how to exist in groups larger than three people without wanting to melt into the floor.
"I don't know," Maya said. "What if I do something weird? What if I can't find a good spot to sit? What if nobody talks to me?"
"Maya. I'll be there. We'll stick together. Plus, Tyler's pool is literally the size of a small lake. You can't go wrong with water."
Saturday arrived with the kind of perfect weather that felt like a personal attack. Maya stood at the edge of Tyler's backyard, heart pounding, clutching her beach towel like it was a lifeline. The pool glittered blue and impossible, surrounded by laughing people who seemed to understand some secret social code she'd never been taught.
Then she saw it.
A cat — a gorgeous, arrogant calico — perched regally on the diving board, tail twitching with what looked like judgment. It stared at the party like it was personally offended by the music choice.
Maya inched closer, drawn by something she couldn't name. The cat watched her approach, then with shocking suddenness, stood up, stretched, and walked directly to her, rubbing against her legs like they'd known each other for years.
"That's Blackjack," someone said behind her. She turned to see Tyler himself, grinning. "He literally never likes anyone. You must be some kind of cat whisperer."
"I— uh—" Maya's brain short-circuited. "He just... approached me?"
"Dude, that's amazing," Tyler said. "Hey everyone! Blackjack actually likes someone!"
And suddenly, people were gathering around, asking how she did it, had she grown up with cats, was it her personality or her aura or what? Maya found herself explaining that she'd grown up with three cats, describing their ridiculous personalities, making Tyler laugh so hard he almost fell into the pool. The cat, apparently satisfied with his work, curled up in Maya's lap like he owned her.
"You're coming to every party now," Jenna whispered, eyes wide. "You just became the Cat Girl, and it's the coolest thing that's happened all year."
Maya looked down at Blackjack, who purred like a tiny engine. Maybe perfect social skills weren't the point. Maybe sometimes, you just needed a cat to choose you, and everything else would follow.
"Next time," Maya said, grinning, "I'm bringing treats. Just to seal the deal."
