The Pool Party Catastrophe
Maya's stomach did backflips as she stared at the invitation on her phone. Jake's pool party. TheJake. Senior class president, track star, and the reason Maya spent way too much time replaying conversations in the shower.
"You're going, right?" Chloe texted. "Everyone's gonna be there."
Maya bit her lip. She'd been running from social situations since freshman year when she accidentally called her teacher 'mom' during attendance. But this was it – her chance to finally be part of something.
The day of the party, Maya showed up fashionably late (on purpose, obviously) only to discover everyone was already in the pool. Of course. She changed into her swimsuit in the bathroom, took three deep breaths, and headed outside.
Just as she stepped onto the deck, Jake's grandma's cat – a grumpy-looking tabby named Mochi – came tearing around the corner with something in its mouth. A phone. HER phone.
"Hey!" Maya shouted, instinctively chasing after it.
Mochi bolted toward the pool with Maya close behind, her bare feet slapping against the concrete. She was so focused on retrieving her phone – which contained her entire draft collection of vaguely poetic Instagram captions – that she didn't notice the edge.
One wrong step, and suddenly Maya was airborne, then underwater. The shocked silence above the surface was worse than the chlorine stinging her eyes.
But when she surfaced, sputtering and wiping water from her eyes, everyone was laughing. Not mean-girl laughing – genuine, doubled-over laughter. Even Jake.
"That was legendary," Jake said, handing her a towel. "Mochi hates everyone, but she stole your phone? She must sense kindred energy."
Maya's face burned, but something shifted. She wasn't 'the quiet freshman' anymore – she was 'the girl who got tackled by a cat at Jake's party.' It wasn't the cool identity she'd imagined, but honestly? It was better.
Later, as she sat on the edge of the pool with her new squad, Maya realized sometimes the best moments happen when you stop overthinking and just start running – even if it's after a cat who's definitely plotting world domination.
